Management of the Potential Brain Death Donor in the Intensive Care Unit, mini-review

Resumen

A pesar del importante y significativo avance de la actividad transplantologica a nivel mundial, la mortalidad en aquellos enfermos que permanecen en lista de espera, aun es significativamente alta. Un elemento clave en el proceso de donación es la identificación temprana del potencial donante; es fundamental  optimizar el  manejo del donador en la UCI,  con el fin de  incrementar el número de órganos ofertados y aceptados, mejorando además la futura función del órgano en el receptor. El rol del intensivista y del equipo de la UCI es clave en este proceso.  El propósito de esta revisión es brindar una actualización sobre  intervenciones generales  para maximizar las posibilidades de éxito del proceso de donación.

Abstract

Despite the important and significant global progress that has been achieved during recent years in transplantation procedures, mortality in those who remain on the waiting list is still significantly high. An essential part of the donation process is the early identification of the potential donor; it is essential to optimize donor management in the ICU in order to improve the future function of the organ in the beneficiary and to maximize the number of organs that can be offered for donation, increasing consequently the total number of donations. The role of the intensivist and the ICU team is fundamental in this process. The purpose of this review is to provide an update on general interventions that maximize the chances of success in the donation process.
