El siguiente documento es un acercamiento al pasado y presente del período del internado de los estudiantes de medicina a nivel mundial, con un enfoque especial a nivel nacional. En esta investigación se analiza el inicio del internado en las carreras de medicina, con las razones que dieron paso a dicho
proceso educativo. Se detalla cómo funciona este período pre profesional en algunas regiones del mundo sobre todo en el continente sudamericano y la región andina. Para finalizar, se detalla el proceder del sistema de internado en el Ecuador, particularmente en la provincia Azuay y en el cantón Cuenca,
haciendo referencia a las facultades de medicina locales.

Historical Article: Storyline of medical internship in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador.
The following document is an approach to the past and present of the medical internship period at worldwide, with a special focus on the national level. This research analyzes the beginning of the internship in medical careers, with the reasons that gave way to this educational process. It details how this preprofessional period works in some regions of the world, especially in the South American continent and the Andean region. Finally, the procedure of the medical internship system in Ecuador detailed, particularly in the province of Azuay and in the canton of Cuenca, referring to the local medical schools.
